The Value of Many Minds

Group of People Talking

By Karyn Greenstreet

Feel stuck in your thinking and actions? Maybe it’s because you’re going it alone.

Too often we spin our wheels, trying to figure out a solution to a problem or find creative ideas. Have you ever gone around and around in circles, never settling on an answer? It’s probably because you’re trying to figure it out all by yourself.

In a mastermind group, you have many minds, many experiences, many insights to draw upon. This is especially true of groups with members that are from different backgrounds or different professions.

Innovation comes when people bounce ideas off each other and share their stories and experiences. In the Wired Magazine article, Accept Defeat: The Neuroscience of Screwing Up, the author tells an interesting story of two scientific labs working on the same problem. One lab group was made up from scientists all from the same field of study; the other group was a mixed group of scientists from several fields of study.

Which group did a better job at figuring out the problem? You guessed it: the mixed group solved the problem in 10 minutes while the other groups of “experts” took far longer to solve the exact same problem.

The article reaches an insightful conclusion: This is why other people are so helpful: They shock us out of our cognitive box.”

Next time you’re trying to figure things out, take your challenge or question to your mastermind group…and watch the creative sparks fly!
